Big Springs Charter School is committed to educating all students in person and online (when needed) so that instruction and continuity of learning is not impacted due to COVID-19 lockdowns or restrictions should another outbreak of the virus take place within the community.  Big Springs Charter School is determined to ensure the safety, well-being and health of all students, parents and staff while on the Big Springs Charter School campuses.

Big Springs Charter School Campus(s) Protocol

Precautions for the health of all persons entering school buildings outside of the student population:

  • Effective March 25, 2021 wearing a mask/face covering while onsite at Big Springs Charter School Campuses is optional (school board approved).  Masks are available upon request for all students, parents, teachers and visitors.
  • Hand sanitizing stations are located in classrooms and throughout school buildings for available use at any time.
  • The maintenance/custodial staff/teachers/students will clean the classrooms at the end of the school day. Custodial staff will clean restrooms and common areas throughout the day.
  • Proper hand washing techniques signage will be maintained throughout campus buildings and restroom facilities.
  • Social distancing will continue as a normal and regular convention.
  • Water fountains on campuses are currently unavailable.

It is important that you do not come to any of the Big Springs Charter School campuses if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone with a confirmed diagnosis,
  • Have had any flu-like symptoms in the last fourteen (14) days, including fever(100.4), chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle pain or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea,
  • Are actively under fourteen (14) days' home quarantine or centralized observation demanded by government and healthcare authorities.

Superintendent Authority During Health Crisis

  • Executive Order GA-34( https://www.dshs.texas.gov/GA34/ which has the effect of state law under Section 418.012 of the Texas Government Code provides TEA with the legal authority to publish requirements for the operation of public school systems during health concerns (COVID-19 pandemic, etc.).
  • TEA recommends that public school systems consult with their local public health authorities and local legal counsel before making final decisions regarding the implementation of any health guidance recommended by the State of Texas and the Texas Education Agency.

  • Based on the current public health situation, that may result during the school year, the Superintendent of schools has been authorized, by the HCYR/Big Springs Charter School Board to implement any and all precautionary and necessary measures to ensure the health, safety and well-being of students and staff to include: social distancing (up to 6 feet), masks/shields, extra sanitizing, limit of visitors on campus, cancelation of extra-curricular activities or functions, temperature screenings, and school closure to reduce spread.

Should any campus of Big Springs Charter School confirm a case of COVID-19 on campus, the confirmed case will be subject to any and all recommendations by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to include quarantine.  

 

Big Springs Charter School, in cooperation with county agencies, will provide information as to where any person, needing a vaccination, may schedule an appointment and obtain a vaccination.

 

Contact tracing will occur at any time a confirmed case has been on confirmed on campus and will be reported to the appropriate state agencies.

 

Big Springs Charter School has certified staff for testing of COVID-19, using the BinaxNOW, COVID-19 Ag CARD.

 

Continuity of Services 

 

Student in-person instruction and the TEA approved “Asynchronous” plan of instruction will be offered to parents indefinitely following the pandemic that impacted the 2019-2020 school year. (Please see the adopted Big Springs Charter School “Asynchronous” plan of instruction for requirements).

 

Student loss of academic competence, through lack of in-person instruction, and as determined through assessment documentation (TPRI, MAP, STAAR Scores, etc.) will be monitored by an individual student committee to provide added instruction and support to ensure the retention of academic knowledge.

 

Students that were determined to not be successful in obtaining and retaining academic information, did not attain a 95% attendance rate and struggled to achieve academically will not be recommended for the online “Asynchronous” plan of instruction.

 

Physical education will continue as normal throughout the school year, as well as team athletic sports and events.

 

Nutrition (breakfast and lunch) will continue as normal on campuses.  If a mandatory shut-down of a campus is required, school breakfast and lunches will continue to be served and delivered to students until the duration of the shut-down exists. 

 

Regular air-ventilation cleansing will occur for all campuses in the Big Springs Charter School district using an air purifying devise that requires a gentle mist of disinfectant to be sprayed in classrooms and in air ducts throughout the buildings.

Per the Texas Education Agency, regular six month reviews must occur with the “Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services (RIPICS)” committee to determine revisions if necessary to the original RIPICS plan. All stakeholders must be advised for public comment.
